Environmental Radiation Specialist 2

Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:
One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Environmental Radiation Specialist 1.

Open Competitive:
A bachelor's degree in biological, environmental or physical science; chemistry; chemical, environmental or nuclear engineering; health physics; or nuclear medicine technology, AND three years of professional experience in radiological science or nuclear engineering, one year of which must have included direct supervision of health physics staff or radiation safety staff*

OR

A master's degree or higher in any of the disciplines listed above AND two years of the qualifying experience noted above, one year of which must have included the supervisory experience noted above.

*Examples of experience that will qualify are radiation protection or control which may include:

1. Ensuring compliance with radiation safety protocols to meet regulatory standards
   
2. Implementation of basic health physics practices
   
3. Use of radioactive isotopes or management of radioactive waste
   
4. Use of radiation detection and measurement instruments
   
5. Characterization of environmental radiological contamination
   

Examples of non-qualifying experience include, but are not limited to: experience limited to the use of X-ray equipment, such as an X-ray technician.

Additional Language For Non-Competitive Promotion:

If there are no more than three individuals interested from among the interested qualified applicants, it may be possible to make a permanent appointment via non-competitive promotion.

Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or

Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 21 or higher and:
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below;
55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.

Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates and 70.4 transfer eligibles): a bachelor's or higher-level degree in biological, environmental or physical science, radiological or nuclear engineering, chemistry, or nuclear medicine technology. In addition, you must have had four years of professional experience in radiological science, radiological engineering, or nuclear engineering, one year of which must have included direct supervision of health physics or radiation safety staff.

Substitution: Unless used to meet the educational requirement described above, a master's degree in radiological, nuclear, or environmental engineering; or in health physics; or a master's degree in public health which includes 18 graduate semester credit hours in applied health physics, radiological, or nuclear engineering and/or radiochemistry may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Be sure to submit a listing of qualifying courses with your application including the course title and number of semester credit hours earned per course.

If there is a viable promotion examination eligible list (three acceptors) for this position, candidates who qualify based on 70.4 transfer or under the 55-b/55-c options cannot be considered.
