Minimum Qualifications for Seasonal Titles
The minimum age for most titles is 18. The minimum age is 16 for the following titles: Office Assistant 1, Office Assistant 1 (Calculations), and Office Assistant 1 (Keyboarding).
Information about employment at summer education camps.
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must be a High School Graduate or have GRE equivalent.
- Must have and maintain a current driver's license.
- Must be certified in an approved CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification and must be in its first year.
- Additional certifications in Waterfront Lifeguarding and other Department of Health approved Camp Certifications are not required but are preferred.
- Must be 18 years of age
AND
- Must have completed at least 24 semester credit hours
PLUS all of the below
- Must be certified in an approved CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification and must be in its first year.
- Must have and maintain a current driver's license.
- Additional certifications in Waterfront Lifeguarding and other Department of Health approved Camp Certifications are not required but are preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree or higher (must be in the natural resources, environmental studies, environmental education, outdoor recreation, STEM: Science (biology, chemistry, computer, earth, environmental, and physics)- Technology- Engineering- Mathematics, elementary-middle-secondary-special education, camp management, or a related field)
OR
- Must be 25 years old AND HAVE

at least two full seasons of program work experience at any summer camp
OR

one full season of program supervisory or management experience at any summer camp
OR
- one full season as a Camp Director at any summer camp

PLUS all of the below
- Work experience must include
- If in a summer camp setting, must include outdoor pursuits in areas such as hiking, canoeing, backpacking, hunting, fishing, water safety, or archery.
- Two full years of experience as a classroom teacher may substitute for two full seasons of program work experience at a summer camp.
- Must be certified in first aid courses as required by the NYS Department of Health, such as:
- American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies or equivalent.
- American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent and must be in its first year.
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver's license.

Must have 48 semester college credit hours, including at least 12 semester credit hours in natural resources, environmental studies, environmental education, outdoor recreation, STEM [Science (biology, chemistry, computer, earth, environmental, and physics); Technology; Engineering; Mathematics], elementary-middle-secondary-special education, or camp management.
OR
- Two years of work experience in natural resources, biological sciences, geology, environmental studies, environmental sciences, environmental education, outdoor recreation, elementary-middle-secondary-special education, or camp management.
PLUS all of the below
- Must be certified in approved first aid courses as required by the NYS Department of Health, such as:
- American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies or equivalent.
- American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent and must be in its first year.
- Depending upon individual assignments, certification in areas such as American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction or Lifeguard with Waterfront Module may be required.
- May be required to serve as Conservation Education Camp Health Director alternate if you have a New York State Emergency Medical Technician or higher level of certification, such as licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or physician's assistant.
- Must have and maintain a current Driver's License.
- Physician*, nurse practitioner*, physician assistant*, registered nurse*, licensed practical nurse*, emergency medical technician or other person acceptable to the Department of Health permit-issuing official. (* To practice profession in New York State, must be NYS licensed)
- CPR/AED certification acceptable to DOH in its first year of certification.
- Must have and maintain a current driver's license.
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications of the Conservation Education Camp Counselor, must meet the NYS DOH requirements for aquatic directors:

AND

Two seasons experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children's camp lifeguard at a pool or beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time
OR
- 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a pool or beach, which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time.

- Must be currently certified in a DOH acceptable certification as a Waterfront Lifeguard and in Lifeguard Management.
- Water Safety Instructor Certification although not required would be a recognized asset for this position.
Two years of experience in the storage, preparation, cooking and dispensing of food; or 60 credit hours in a degree related to culinary arts; or one year of experience as described above and 30 credit hours in a degree related to culinary arts. Driver’s license is recommended.
NOTE: A candidate may use the camp cook position as part of an internship to complete their requirements for their two year or higher culinary degree.

Must possess a motor vehicle operator's license and have completed either;
1. A one year course at a ranger school, or similar learning institution, in a park or natural resource management, law enforcement or similar curriculum;
Or 2. Have on season (6 months minimum) of recreation facility experience involving contact with the public or in the enforcement of laws, rules and regulations;
Or 3. One year of working or interacting with the public in a recreational facility;
Or 4. One year of environmental experience in law enforcement, security services employment, military service or similar experience actively involved with public contact or in the enforcement of laws, policies, and rules and regulations;
Or 5. Have completed at least 15 college credit hours in criminal justice or similar course.
One year of experience in the operation of equipment and the possession of a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
High school diploma or possession of a high school equivalency diploma or a USAFI GED certificate (high school level) OR a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience assisting in engineering or related work, at the rate of six months of experience for one year of high school.
Either 1. ONE YEAR of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;
Or 2. 18 semester credit hours of college course work in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.
Or 3. Graduation from a high school technical program (recognized by an accrediting agency as meeting acceptable program practices and standards) in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, electronics OR from a military construction specialty school.*
NOTE: *Acceptable military training may include documented completion of United States Army 14-Week Corp of Engineers "Field 12", United States Navy Construction Force "A" and United States Navy Construction Force "C" schools "Navy Seabees", United States Marine Corps Combat Engineers "MOS1371" school, or United States Air Force Civil Engineer Force "Prime BEEF" or "RED HORSE" training. Training schools must accompany one follow-on duty station in said field.
Candidates must have one year of experience in environmental education programs; or one year college study with specialization in natural science, natural resources, or environmental education.
Either 1. Completion of at least 18 semester credit hours in any combination of the following courses: engineering, such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical and/or sanitary; public health; environmental and/or engineering technology; drafting; mathematics; surveying; computer science; environmental science; and/or the natural and physical sciences;
Or 2. Graduation from a high school technical education program in technical aeronautics, technical architectural drafting and building construction, technical chemistry, industrial chemistry, technical electricity/electronics, technical mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design or technical instrumentation and control systems, computer circuitry;
Or 3. Four years of experience performing engineering technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical or sanitary engineering technology; or environmental technology; or as a surveyor or drafter.

Two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
There are no minimum education or experience requirements. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying and silviculture
OR
One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and to communicate verbally for the purpose of exchanging information.
Either 1. Completion of sixty (60) college semester credit hours which includes at least eighteen (18) semester credit hours in biology, chemistry, physics, health science, or science technology;
Or 2. two years of professional experience in either a laboratory or a clinical setting performing technical laboratory test and procedures;
Or 3. Thirty (30) college semester credit hours which includes at least eighteen (18) semester credit hours in biology, chemistry, physics, health science or science technology AND one year of experience described in #2 above;
Or 4. an associate's degree or higher in biology, chemistry, physics, health science, or science technology.
There are no minimum education or experience requirements. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must be at least fifteen years of age.
- At the time of employment, all candidates must possess current certifications in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (or the equivalent) and the American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Waterfront Skills Certificate (or the equivalent). Also must have American Red Cross First Aid (or equivalent) if not included in the lifeguard training course. All certifications must remain current through the entire operating season.
- Candidates may participate in the practical examination, called the NYS Lifeguard Qualifying Procedure, without the above certifications; however they must be provided before employment begins.
- Candidates must successfully complete the NYS Lifeguard Qualifying Procedure with DEC or the New York State Office of Parks/ Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP).
- Candidates must meet a minimum base of 20/70 uncorrected vision in both eyes and be correctable to the 20/40 standard. Candidates tested at a vision level below 20/40 in either one or both eyes must correct to a minimum of 20/40 with 20/20 preferred.
Must meet the minimum qualifications for Lifeguard above and in addition have two seasons as a NYS Lifeguard with DEC or OPRHP.
Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Either 1. six months of experience as a police/emergency services/public safety dispatcher, OR as a member of a paid/volunteer fire company or emergency medical services squad;
Or 2. one year of experience as a radio dispatcher of a mobile fleet;
Or 3. two years of experience as a toll collector for a public highway or bridge system;
Or 4. six months of experience in a traffic management center;
Or 5. one year of active duty service as an honorable discharge from the United States military as a dispatcher of military police or security personnel.
Examples of Non-Qualifying Experience: Experience limited to cellular phones, paging systems, intercom systems, CB radios, or ham radios.
Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Successful completion of a NYS two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Traineeship or NYS two-year carpenter training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent carpenter two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in carpentry under a skilled journey level carpenter which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in carpentry or training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
