Division of Mineral Resources, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
The file, wellDOS.zip, consists of data from the Division of Mineral Resources' oil and gas database. The wellDOS.zip file contains two separate files: wellspublic.csv and OilandGasMetadata.html. The wellspublic.csv file contains records from the oil and gas database of wells that have been permitted, drilled, or plugged in New York State. The file type of the 'wellspublic' file is comma-separated values (.csv) to simplify importing into spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel- and ESRI ArcGIS-compatible). The associated metadata file, OilandGasMetadata.html, contains information about the dataset, which is also detailed in the tables below. Some well records contain confidential information which has been replaced by the word "CONFIDENTIAL".
Field names are listed on the first row of the .csv file.
Latitude and longitude are in the NAD83 datum. Coordinates are in decimal degrees. [e.g. -73.23541] Longitudinal values are negative (-) to reflect the correct geographical coordinate quadrant.

Usage Notes:
- This data has not been field verified but is expected to be within approximately 300 feet of the actual well location. The data should not be used for precise determination of distances to buildings, property boundaries or other features. It is most useful for determining general locations of wells.
