This page highlights ongoing special studies being conducted by the DEC’s water quality monitoring programs. Special Studies are designed to answer specific questions regarding habitat and water quality and are typically conducted during a 1-2 year time period. To view the sampling locations related to these studies, please see the interactive map in the Sampling Location Section on our Monitoring Program Design page.
Ponded Waters
Public Water Source Assessment
QAPP ID: QAPP-LCI-0002_V25-1_Lake-Special-Studies (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to collect samples from ponded drinking water sources that are unassessed and likely impaired to support Drinking Water Source Protection Program (DWSP2) priorities and a confirmed assessment following NYS’s Consolidated Assessment and Listing Methodology (CALM). Target analytes have water quality standards applicable to class AA, AA-Special, A, and A-Special waterbodies to assess the best use of source of water supply. Waterbodies will be sampled three times during the sampling season (June-September). In 2025, Fonda Reservoir will be the target of this monitoring effort.
Finger Lakes Assessment
QAPP ID: QAPP-LCI-0002_V25-1_Lake-Special-Studies (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to reach a confirmed assessment following NYS’s Consolidated Assessment and Listing Methodology (CALM) in the main waterbody segment of the eleven Finger Lakes. To capture seasonal variability the lakes, samples will be collected by staff and interns of the Finger Lakes Watershed Program in June, July, August, and September of 2024 and 2025. Target analytes have water quality standards applicable to class AA, AA-Special, A, and A-Special waterbodies to assess the best uses of fishing, secondary contact recreation, primary contact recreation, and source of water supply.
Department Interest Sampling
QAPP ID: QAPP-LCI-0002_V25-1_Lake-Special-Studies (PDF)
The purpose of this monitoring effort is to inform a variety of department interests based on an annual solicitation from the public and DEC staff. Ten lakes will be monitored once in 2025.
Flowing Waters
Ischua Creek
QAPP IDs: QAPP-SHORT-0010_V25-1 and QAPP-WQM-0099_V25-3_Ischua-Creek
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of fish kill that occurred in Ischua Creek in August of 2025. DEC has been contributed and provided oversight of ambient water quality monitoring occurring in Ischua and Olean Creeks.
