Ancient Knowledge and Enduring Futures is presented by Dr. Leora Gansworth, Anishinabe-kwe, a community-engaged scholar and Anishinabe geographer. Her professional work draws from Anishinabe legal traditions including relationships and responsibilities to water.
The renewed interest in American eel populations highlights existing knowledge gaps which often lead to the fish being labeled "mysterious." This presentation draws from Indigenous (specifically, Anishinabe) cosmological and geographic knowledge to reorient the mysteriousness as a strength and not a challenge to be conquered. Its key suggestion is that future conservation practices which privilege eel migration require meaningful and reflective engagement with authentic Indigenous history and contemporary realities.
