The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in coordination with county planning departments, soil & water conservation districts, and regional planning councils is hosting a series of county workshops throughout August 2025 to engage local communities in the development of the Genesee River Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP), which will focus on improving water quality in the Genesee River, its tributaries, lakes, and ponds. We encourage you to consider attending one or more of these workshops so that we may learn more about local water quality concerns and potential opportunities related to two pollutants of concern, sediment and nutrients, specifically, phosphorus.
Meeting Objectives: This one-and-a-half-hour workshop will start with a brief presentation about the Genesee River WIP and then ask participants to share information about erosion and nutrient loading concerns and opportunities to address these concerns. Ways to share your thoughts will include marking up hard copy maps, discussing ideas with meeting organizers, and using virtual tools like Google Earth.
The information you share will allow this plan to consider local concerns and projects that will complement water quality monitoring and modeling work that has been previously completed by local researchers. Having a plan that reflects local needs and priorities can help demonstrate that your local projects can contribute to achieving the plan’s goals, which should ultimately help acquire grant funding to support water quality improvements in your community!
