Crown Point Reservation - Draft Unit Management Plan
The Crown Point Reservation is a 440-acre expanse located on the shores of Lake Champlain in the town of Crown Point, and includes the Crown Point State Historic Site, Campground, and Day-Use Area. Occupied by both the French and the British during the 1700's before being overtaken by the colonists during the American Revolution, the site is home to many historic structures, including two National Historic Landmarks.
Day-to-day management of the Crown Point State Historic Site (link leaves DEC's website) falls to the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). However, since the underlying land is State Forest Preserve and protected by Article XIV of the New York State Constitution (link leaves DEC website), the overall management responsibility rests with DEC. Like all state-operated campgrounds in the Adirondack Park, day-to-day management of the Crown Point Campground and Day-Use Area is performed by DEC.
Due to the close proximity of the historic site and campground/day-use area, as well as the interrelated management activities that occur within these components of the Crown Point Reservation, a unit management plan (UMP) is being developed that includes both the historic site and the campground/day-use area. Additionally, due to the unique management scenario that exists, OPRHP will be providing significant input into the plan.
