Remsen-Lake Placid Travel Corridor - Unit Management Plan
The Remsen-Lake Placid Travel Corridor is a railroad right-of-way approximately 119 miles long and generally 100 feet wide. Constructed in 1892, the line was operated continuously until freight service ceased in 1972. In 1974, the Corridor was purchased by New York State. In 1977, the State leased the line to the Adirondack Railway Corporation. After the bankruptcy of the lessee, and following a long period of litigation, the State acquired the remainder of the lease in 1991. Title to the Corridor remains under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation (DOT).
DEC and DOT adopted a Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the Remsen-Lake Placid Travel Corridor in 1996. If you have questions about the UMP, please e-mail us at [email protected].

2020 Amendment - Rail Trail and Rail Service Improvements
DEC and DOT have completed an amendment and Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (FSEIS) that proposes to remove the rails along the corridor between the Village of Tupper Lake and the Village of Lake Placid and convert it to a multiple-use recreational trail. The amendment also proposes to leave in place the existing rails between the Village of Remsen and the Big Moose Station; and to rehabilitate the rails between the Big Moose Station and the Village of Tupper Lake.
