DEC's Urban and Community Forestry Program (UCF) promotes workshops, conferences and grant opportunities through social media and DEC Delivers. We encourage you to sign up for emails through DEC Delivers. In addition to urban forestry topics, you will receive information on trees, plants, land management, and other relevant new from across the state in a monthly email newsletter titled "Forests, Plants, and Land Conservation".
Cancellations and refunds: For all workshops the registration fee is not refundable. Registration may be transferred to someone else though, please contact [email protected] if you can no longer make it and someone else will attend in your place. Registration payments are handled by our advisory group, the NYS Urban Forestry Council.

April 4, 2024 | Webinar: SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard Noon – 1 PM The Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard promotes sustainable urban and community forests based on 16 objectives. This standard is appropriate for organizations that own, manage, or are responsible for urban and/or community forests. These organizations can come from all facets of the urban and community forest sector, including, but not limited to: governmental organizations (i.e., municipalities, counties, states, provinces), non-governmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples, community groups, healthcare organizations, educational organizations, and corporate organizations. May 1 and 2, 2024 | R8 Finger Lakes ReLeaf Workshop: Electrical Hazard Awareness and First aid and CPR at Italian American Community Center of Rochester Day 1: 8:30 AM - 4 PM Day 2: Session 1 8:30 AM – 12 PM, Session 2 12:30 PM – 4 PM (pick one session to attend) Save the date! This popular annual workshop on electrical hazard awareness with Dr. John Ball returns. New this year, a second half day program for first aid and CPR certification is being offered as well. May 10, 2024 | R2 NYC ReLeaf Workshop: Changing climate changing forests 9 AM - 12 PM Join us for a stewardship focused workshop to learn about a variety of topics including beech leaf disease, urban trees and carbon, NYS Housing Authority tree projects, youth involvement in green careers, and the Woodlawn arboretum. Staff from Woodlawn Cemetery will discuss managing the cemetery’s arboretum in a changing climate, their tree intern program, and their youth program with youth from neighboring Bronx communities. Trees NY staff will share about tree planting projects in partnership with the NYC Housing authority. While DEC foresters will share updates on beech leaf disease and carbon sequestration and urban trees. After the program there will be an optional walking tour of the Woodlawn Arboretum. This workshop is free but online registration is required in advance. |
May 14, 2024 | R7 Central NY ReLeaf Workshop: Planting and Pruning Join us for a planting and pruning workshop at Thornden Park in Syracuse for demonstrations of planting different types of stock trees (balled and burlapped, container, and bare root). Learn about common problems with nursery stock and how to be protective with your pruning. Cost $30 general public, $25 ReLeaf and NYS Urban Forestry Council members. Register online. |
