New York's Premier Outdoor Magazine: Bringing Nature to Your Door
Continuously published since 1946, the Conservationist is one of the longest-running outdoor magazines in the country. Founded by Clayton B. Seagears, who was the Director of Conservation Education for what was then the New York State Conservation Department, the Conservationist aimed to fill the need for a medium in which to bring conservation to your door and report on State and local efforts to solve our mutual problems—all for the low subscription price of $1.00!
While changes have been made to the magazine over its nearly 80 years, including the creation of the digital edition in 2016, we have made every effort to stay faithful to the founding editors’ vision of making a well-rounded, feature-full, advertising-free, and accessible publication for the people of New York State. Each issue features articles about DEC’s involvement on environmental and conservation issues around the state, outdoor adventure and recreation opportunities, natural science and history, and so much more!
