Cobb Brook State Forest

Cobb Brook State Forest encompasses 688-acres of natural forest cover, planted plantations, streams and several wetlands providing a varied recreational experience. The state land is currently managed for water quality protection, recreation, wildlife habitat and timber production.

There are 3.1 miles of unpaved roads and snowmobile trails that may be used for hiking.

There is one lean-to available on a first come, first served basis. Primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

Furnace Creek and its tributaries run along the very northern portion of the forest. Cobb Brook runs along the very western edge of the property. Both of these streams are classified as protected trout streams.

North Central NY Fishing provides information on fishing in the area and links to top fishing waters, stocking lists, public fishing access and waters open to ice fishing listed by county.

Cobb Brook State Forest contains about 1.2 miles of snowmobile trails that are located off of Dingle Street in the southwest portion of the state forest. Taberg Trail Blazers, Inc. and T. C. Riders Snowmobile Club maintain the snowmobile trails on this property through a volunteer stewardship agreement. These trails connect to the NYS Snowmobile Trails network.

Directions

From Rome, take Rome Taberg Road. Continue straight on Rome Taberg Road that eventually turns into State Route 69. On State Route 69, make a right hand turn on Taberg Road. At the "T," make a left hand turn which is Taberg-Florence Road. In about 3 miles, you will reach the access road that accesses the state forest. If you take a left on Skinner Settlement Road, just up the road and then take another left on Dingle Street, you can access another portion of the state forest. There are no maintained parking areas on this property

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Cobb Brook State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Specific Rules

Mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and horseback riding are all permitted on the property; however, there are no currently maintained trails for these activities.

Planning and Management

DEC manages these lands in accordance with the management activities described in the 46-Corners Unit Management Plan (UMP). In addition to management objectives, the UMP contains detailed information on natural features, recreational infrastructure, geology, natural and human history, habitats, wildlife, fisheries and much more.

History

The majority of the land that makes up Cobb Brook State Forest was acquired in 1933, 1937 and 1938. The property is comprised of northern hardwood stands, plantations and several wetlands. The dominant species that make up the northern hardwoods are red maple, sugar maple, white ash, black cherry, beech and hemlock. The plantations were planted in 1936. White pine, red pine, Norway spruce, red spruce and Japanese larch were the main species used. Additional planting was done in 1938, 1939, 1940 and 1954. Species used at this time included white pine, red pine, Scotch pine, jack pine, white spruce, red spruce, European larch and Douglas fir. Today what remains of these plantations includes Scotch pine, white pine, red pine, jack pine and Japanese larch.

Additional information, outdoor equipment, trip suggestions and guided or self-guided tours may be obtained from outdoor guide and outfitting businesses. Check area chambers of commerce, telephone directories or search the internet for listings.
