Miyawaki Pocket Forest

This 2000-square-foot forest was planted in June of 2025 by DEC staff and volunteer members of the public. Following the Miyawaki method of afforestation, the team densely planted native species of trees and shrubs in a small area that had become infested with invasive plants. Over time these trees and shrubs will grow to maturity—in fact, Miyawaki forests are designed to reach maturity within a fraction of the time as a naturally occurring forest. The forest and surrounding pollinator areas will add to Five Rivers’ biodiversity, supporting a range of wildlife, from tiny insects to birds, mammals, and more.
