Located on picturesque Lake George just 2 miles north of the Village of Lake George, this has become a very popular vacation location. Lake George region offers some of the most diverse recreation opportunities in NYS. A Junior Naturalist Program is also offered at Hearthstone, and the successful camper can earn a naturalist patch for their efforts.

In the camping area, wheelchair accessible features include the:

Fish present in Lake George include: lake trout, landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, and a variety of pan fish. Fishing licenses are no longer being sold at any of our campground facilities, but can be conveniently purchased on-line or by phone.

Nearby hiking opportunities include Prospect Mountain. The red-marked 1 5/8 mile hiking trail leads to the summit of the mountain. There is no fee for hikers and on a clear day, the 100-mile view from Prospect's summit encompasses five states. Although there are a few strenuous spots along the way, climbing to the summit is not considered difficult for those in reasonably good shape. Part of the trail follows the road bed of the former railway that served the once-thriving hotel on the mountain. For a fee, users can drive to the summit on the Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway.

Swimming at DEC campgrounds is unsupervised by lifeguards. DEC advises those wishing to swim to access the water from the designated beach area(s) only. Beaches are maintained and patrolled by campground staff. Swimming is prohibited from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise.

Planning and Management

The Final Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the campground guides the DEC's land management activities at this facility for a five-year period, although a number of goals and objectives in the plan focus on a much longer time period. The UMP addresses specific objectives and actions for public use at this facility.

Area Attractions

Nature lovers will find boating, canoeing, hiking, and mountain climbing. Shoppers will enjoy the outlet malls, and everyone can enjoy the restaurants, theme parks, theatres, and historic sites.

Historic Interest

The campground was established in May 1927 on 98.6 acres and is one of four campgrounds operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on and around Lake George (Lake George Islands, Rogers Rock, and Lake George Battleground are the others).

The campground is located on the west shore in the southern end of Lake George. The lake is approximately 28,200 acres with a maximum depth of 190 feet. It is 32 miles long and has a maximum width of 3 miles.

Junior Naturalist Program

Our campgrounds become an outdoor classroom for young children (5-13) and their families. Enjoy games and activities to earn a beautiful embroidered patch.
