Huntersfield State Forest location

The 1,300-acre Huntersfield State Forest consists of evergreen plantation or a mixture of evergreens and northern hardwoods. The upland portions of Huntersfield consist mainly of northern hardwood forests. Elevation in the state forest ranges from 2,000 feet to approximately 3,400 feet at the summit of Huntersfield Mountain. Mountain biking, snowmobiling and horseback riding are allowed on the property but there are no designated trails or maintained areas for these activities.

A designated foot trail just over a mile long runs from the shale pit on the Huntersfield Truck Trail to the Huntersfield lean-to, located near the summit of Huntersfield Mountain. From the lean-to, a spur trail of the Long Path Foot Trail runs easterly and connects with the Long Path Hiking Trail on Ashland Pinnacle State Forest.

Huntersfield State Forest offers a lean-to located near the summit of Huntersfield Mountain.

At-large primitive camping is also allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the any water, road, or trail. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

From Windham, take NYS Route 23 west to County Route 63. Take County Route 63 to the T intersection with County Route 10. Turn left onto County Route 10 and proceed approximately 1 mile to Schrader Road. Turn right onto Schrader Road and proceed almost 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Huntersfield Road. Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly; minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Huntersfield State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

How We Manage Huntersfield State Forest

DEC is developing a unit management plan which will describe the management activities for these lands. In addition to management objectives, the UMP will contain detailed information on natural features, recreational infrastructure, geology, natural & human history, habitats, wildlife, fisheries and much more.
