This is a great family spot with many summer activities nearby. Visit the nearby water park, browse the various shops in Old Forge, visit one of the nearby museums including the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, golf in nearby Inlet and Indian Lake. Hiking opportunities in the area include Old Dam Nature Trail, Rocky Mountain, Blackbear Mountain and Bald Mountain. Access to Moose River Plains Wild Forest is also close by. Limekiln Lake Campground has 271 campsites, hot showers, a guarded swimming beach and canoe rentals. Canoes, rowboats and motorboats are allowed on the lake, giving access to fishing for a wide variety of fish including yellow perch, bullhead and splake.

Amenities

271 tent and trailer sites; picnic area with tables, fireplaces, firewood and ice sales; pavilion rental; flush toilets; hot showers; trailer dump station; recycling center; sand beach; swimming area; bathhouse; nature trail; small boat launch; canoe and kayak rentals.

Campsite Restoration Project

Featured Activities

Motor boats are allowed. 

Canoe and kayak rentals are available.

A wide variety of fish, including yellow perch, bullhead, blue gill, and splake inhabit in the lake. Fishing licenses are no longer being sold at any of our campground facilities, but can be conveniently purchased on-line or by phone.

The Old Dam Nature Trial is a 1.6 mile loop hike starting behind campsite #87. The trail crosses Limekiln Creek in two places on bridges. At the southernmost point of the loop there is a junction with the Limekiln Creek-Third Lake Trail which continues on another 4 miles to South Shore Road. In addition, the campground is surrounded by the 66,000+ acre Moose River Plains Wild Forest which offers many hiking opportunities including several accessible trails.

Swimming at DEC campgrounds is unsupervised by lifeguards. DEC advises those wishing to swim to access the water from the designated beach area(s) only. Beaches are maintained and patrolled by campground staff. Swimming is prohibited from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise.

Directions

From New York State Thruway (I-90), Exit 31 at Utica; north on Rte. 12 to Alder Creek; Rte. 28 through villages of Old Forge and Inlet; just outside of Inlet turn right on Limekiln Lake Road, then 1 1/2 miles, turn right at campground sign, 1/2 mile to booth.

From New York State Thruway (I-90) at Amsterdam, Exit 27, north on Rte. 30 to Blue Mountain Lake, west on Rte. 28, just prior to Village of Inlet turn left on Limekiln Lake Road, then 1 1/2 miles, turn right at campground sign, 1/2 mile to booth.

Planning and Management

The Limekiln Lake Public Campground Unit Management Plan (PDF) (UMP) guides the DEC's land management activities at this facility for a five-year period, although a number of goals and objectives in the plan focus on a much longer time period. The UMP addresses specific objectives and actions for public use at this facility.

Area Attractions

Area attractions include the Old Forge region with amusements, restaurants, and golf courses, the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake and golf courses at Inlet and Indian Lake.

Historic Interest

Land was purchased from Gould Paper Company, and work was started on Limekiln Lake Public Campground in 1960. The park was opened in 1963, and by 1964 all of the present 271 campsites were developed. In 1991 a shower building was added.

Junior Naturalist Program

Our campgrounds become an outdoor classroom for young children (5-13) and their families. Enjoy games and activities to earn a beautiful embroidered patch.
