Line Brook State Forest

This 1,116-acre state forest bears the name of the trout stream that flows through the property. The majority of the landscape is covered with a relatively mature mixture of hard maple, red maple, black cherry and white ash. The state forest was created for the purpose of reforestation, wildlife management, timber production, recreation and watershed protection.

There is one trail (0.11 mile) on the property that provides access to Stony Brook. The rest of the property can be explored via the unpaved roadways that traverse the property.

Primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

Line Brook runs the full length of the property, from north to south, and provides excellent trout fishing. There are several tributaries of Mill Stream that offer fishing opportunities for brook trout. Stony Brook runs through the eastern portion of the property and offers brook trout fishing. Just north of the property, Mill Stream Fishing Access provides additional fishing opportunities.

There are no trails on the property; however, a route from the NYS Snowmobile network runs along the boundary line formed by the unpaved Jackson Road (also known as Millstream Road) and is maintained and groomed by the Osceola Snowmobile Association through a volunteer stewardship agreement.

From Boonville, take Route 294 west 6.6 miles to West Leyden. Turn left on State Route 26 then a quick right on Route 46. Go 16 miles to Osceola, turn right on North Osceola Road, proceed 8 miles.

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Line Brook State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Specific Rules

Mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and horseback riding are all permitted on the property, however, there are no currently maintained trails for these activities.

  • Gas, dining, lodging, food and other supplies can be found in the nearby communities of Constableville, Camden, Orwell, Redfield and Altmar.

Adirondack Tug Hill website and Visit Oswego County website can provide information about other recreation, attractions and amenities in this area.

Numerous guidebooks and maps are available with information on the lands, waters, trails and other recreational facilities in this area. These can be purchased at most outdoor equipment retailers, bookstores and on-line booksellers.

Additional information, outdoor equipment, trip suggestions and guided or self-guided tours may be obtained from outdoor guide and outfitting businesses. Check area chambers of commerce, telephone directories or search the internet for listings.
