This 1,210-acre state forest is named for the cold springs that bubble up here, forming the headwaters of the historic Mohawk River. The forest consists of two neighboring parcels with similar traits. The state forest was created for the purpose of reforestation, wildlife management, timber production, recreation and watershed protection.

There are 1.65 miles of trails that provide access to the forest and may be used for hiking.

Primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

The East Branch of the Mohawk River, which flows through the southern parcel, and Olmstead Brook, which flows through the northern parcel, each offer trout fishing opportunities for this property. Access may be restricted by the limited infrastructure in place.

There are 1.65 miles of trails that traverse the property. These trails join the NYS Snowmobile network of trails and are maintained and groomed by the Southern Tug Hill Sno-Riders through a volunteer stewardship agreement.

From Lyons Falls take State Route #12-D south 7.2 miles to Kessler Road, turn left, proceed 0.5 miles.

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Mohawk Springs State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Specific Rules

Mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and horseback riding are all permitted on the property, however, there are no currently maintained trails for these activities.

Timber Management

The majority of this forest is comprised of pine plantations that were planted by the state soon after it acquired the land in the 1930s and again in the 1950s. Deep winter snows and relatively shallow soils constitute growing conditions that tax even the hardiest of tree species. However, today, under the careful husbandry of DEC's foresters, these stressed timber stands have developed into a nearly mature and increasingly valuable resource.
