The 544-acre Ralph Road State Forest is the only state forest located in Warren County. There are no designated or marked trails; however, Ralph Road State Forest does have unmaintained former logging roads which are suitable for non-motorized recreation.

There are no designated campsites; however, primitive camping is allowed. Camping must be 150 feet away from a water body, road, or trail. Camping for more than three nights or in a group of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

Hunting is allowed during appropriate seasons. The main furbearers and game species found on the property include beaver, red fox, cottontail rabbit and woodcock.

Warren County has a variety of wildlife. In addition to the notable hunting and trapping species, an assortment of birds (including song birds, owls and hawks) as well as mammals (including moles, mice, squirrels and chipmunks) can be found within Ralph Road State Forest. Whitetail deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse and eastern coyote have also been reported in the area. There are also several beaver ponds on the property.

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Ralph Road State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Specific Rules

Hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking and horseback riding are allowed within the property but there are no designated trails or maintained areas for these activities.

Planning and Management

DEC has developed a Saratoga Warren Draft Unit Management Plan (PDF) which describes the proposed management activities for these lands. In addition to management objectives, the UMP contains detailed information on natural features, recreational infrastructure, geology, natural and human history, habitats, wildlife, fisheries and much more.
