Roseboom State Forest location

The 620-acre Roseboom State Forest features a mix of planted and natural tree species scattered across the landscape. The unit was purchased in the 1960s for land conservation, reforestation, and the development of natural resources.

There are no marked trails, but the wide, unmarked trails and well-maintained access roads are easily followed and offer easy walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

No primitive campsites exist on Roseboom State Forest, but primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail, or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

Roseboom State Forest is open to hunting during appropriate seasons. Wildlife to expect in this area include whitetail deer, rabbit, squirrel, grouse and turkey along with mink, raccoon, fox, coyote and bobcat.

Roseboom State Forest is ideally suited to cross-country skiing, especially for beginners. There are no marked trails, but the wide, well-maintained access roads are easily followed and offer easy cross-country skiing.

Accessible Recreation

There are two trails which are designated motorized access routes for hunting and wildlife viewing available to people with qualifying disabilities. One is 0.8-mile long and located off of Roseboom Road. The second is 0.4-mile long and located off of Roscoe Jones Road in the southwest corner of the property. A permit from the Motorized Access Program for People with Disabilities (MAPPWD) can be obtained from the nearest DEC office.

There are no specific parking areas within Roseboom State Forest, however roadside parking is available throughout the property.

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly; minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Roseboom State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Planning and Management

DEC is developing a management plan which will describe the management activities for these lands. In addition to management objectives, the UMP will contain detailed information on natural features, recreational infrastructure, geology, natural and human history, habitats, wildlife, fisheries and much more.
