Scaroon Manor Campground is located on the west shore of Schroon Lake on Taylor's Point and with 1200 feet of shoreline. The campground is a great place to fish, motorboat, paddle, bicycle, picnic and swim. The campground, located in the Town of Chester in Warren County and bordering the Town of Schroon in Essex County, has storied history as a resort and is an important component of the local cultural heritage.

In the Day Use Area, wheelchair accessible features include the:

• Hand boat launch with dock;
• Fish/viewing platform;
• Picnic area and pavilion;
• Hiking trail;
• Beach access route; and
• Restroom

Scaroon Manor Campground was designed and constructed to be fully accessible to people with disabilities. The majority of recreation features and campsites, and all restrooms and shower buildings meet accessibility standards.

In the Camping Area, wheelchair accessible features include the:

• Four accessible campsites (Sites: 1, 15, 21, 45);
• Restrooms; and
• Shower buildings

The trail along the shoreline is 0.2 mile one way and has a gentle grade (max. slope 5%), wide tread (min. width 5 feet), and firm crushed stone surface.

Directions

From Albany and Points South - Take Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87 North) to Exit 26. Turn Left onto Valley Farm Road .3 mile. Turn Right onto US Route 9 follow signs to Schroon Lake. Campground will be 3.9 miles on the right at 8728 US Route 9

Take Exit 27 turn Right onto Old Schroon Road for .1 mile to US Route 9. Turn Right and go .8 mile to Campground on the left.

From Montreal and Points North - Take Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87 South) to Exit 27. Turn Right onto Old Schroon Road for .1 mile to US Route 9. Turn Right and go .8 mile to Campground on the left.

Planning and Management

The Final Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the campground guides the DEC's land management activities at this facility for a five-year period, although a number of goals and objectives in the plan focus on a much longer time period. The UMP addresses specific objectives and actions for public use at this facility.

Area Attractions

Restaurants, antique shops, gift stores, and various craft shops. Stone Bridge and Caves is located about 1 1/2 miles South of the campground.

Historic Interest

Prior to acquisition by New York State in 1967, the site had a long illustrious history as a privately operated resort and recreation facility. The facility was a destination resort of the wealthy and offered a broad range of facilities and activities which included golf, swimming, canoeing, boating, sailing, water skiing, bowling, handball, baseball, basketball, tennis, hiking, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and roller skating. The amphitheater hosted many famous entertainers during its heyday. In 1957 the movie Marjorie Morningstar starring Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood was filmed on the grounds of Scaroon Manor. Informational panels describing the history of the site are located in kiosks throughout the campground.
