St. Regis River State Forest location

The 929-acre St. Regis River State Forest features access to the St. Regis River with fishing, hiking, hunting and trapping opportunities.

There are 3 hiking trails:

  • The 0.63-mile Red Trail runs along on the west side of St. Regis River
  • The 0.96-mile Yellow Trail runs along the east side of St. Regis River
  • The 0.74-mile St. Regis School Trail runs loops out and back from the northern boundary line of St. Regis Falls Central School

Primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail, or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

The St. Regis River provides trout fishing opportunities for both brown and rainbow trout. From Malone, NY: Head southwest on 11B for 14 miles and take a left onto Doug Smith Rd. Continue south on Doug Smith Road for 4.63 miles and turn right onto Port Kent Road. Parking area will be on the left after 0.1 mile.

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of St. Regis River State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Specific Rules

Paddling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking and horseback riding are allowed within the property but there are no designated trails or maintained areas for these activities.

Planning and Management

DEC is developing a unit management plan (UMP) which will describe the management activities for these lands. In addition to management objectives, the UMP will contain detailed information on natural features, recreational infrastructure, geology, natural and human history, habitats, wildlife, fisheries and much more.
