The 567-acre Woodhull State Forest has limited infrastructure in place, creating an authentic woodland recreation experience. The unpaved roads and unmaintained skid trails allow for multi-use recreational opportunities. The property is managed for multiple uses, including timber production, watershed protection, wildlife habitat and recreation.

There are currently no trails maintained on this property; however, there is an unpaved road and snowmobile trails that may be used for hiking and other activities.

Primitive camping is allowed. Campsites must be at least 150 feet away from the nearest road, trail or body of water. Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger.

There is no direct access to Woodhull Creek from the property; however, there is a public angler's parking area just south of the property on Horton Road. The creek has wild brook trout populations but it can be tough to fish due to the alder covered banks.

There is a 1.6-mile snowmobile trail that crosses the property and joins the NYS Snowmobile Trail network. The Trackside Blazers Snowmobile Club are responsible for maintaining and grooming snowmobile trails though a volunteer stewardship agreement.

General information on animals includes links to information about birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects that inhabit or migrate through the state.

Species common to the area include whitetail deer, turkeys, hawks, song birds, humming birds, dragonflies and chipmunks.

Directions

From Forestport, head north on State Route 28 for 3.6 miles. There are no official parking areas for this property. There is a pull-off on State Route 28, where the snowmobile route crosses the street, which may be used for parking.

Rules, Regulations and Outdoor Safety

Practice Leave No Trace Principles when recreating on state land to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, minimize impact on the natural resources and avoid conflicts with other users.

All users of Woodhull State Forest must follow all State Land Use Regulations and should follow all Outdoor Safety Practices for the safety of the user and protection of the resource.

Specific Rules

Mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and horseback riding are all permitted on the property; however, there are currently no trails maintained for these activities.

DEC manages these lands in accordance with the management activities described in the Adirondack Foot Hills Unit Management Plan (UMP) (PDF). In addition to management objectives, the UMP contains detailed information on natural features, recreational infrastructure, geology, natural and human history, habitats, wildlife, fisheries and much more.

History and Timber Management

The majority of the land that makes up Woodhull State Forest was acquired by New York State in 1955 and is comprised of natural forest, plantations, seedling - sapling, open wetlands and ponds. The dominant species in the natural forest is balsam fir, American beech, black cherry, Eastern hemlock, red maple, sugar maple, white ash and yellow birch. Woodhull State Forest is also comprised of plantations, which are dominated by Norway spruce, red pine, Scotch pine and white pine.
