The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Region 6 is hosting 'Get Outdoors & Get Together Day' on June 11 at the Lowville Forestry Demonstration Area, 7327 State Route 812, Lowville, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As recently announced by Governor Kathy Hochul (leaves DEC's website), Get Outdoors & Get Together Day will bring people of all abilities, ages, identities, and backgrounds together for fun, healthful activities as part of the Governor's initiative to broaden the diversity of users and ensure inclusivity of access to public lands. Equipment will be provided for archery and fishing. Attendees may also bring their own fishing poles and equipment for personal use. Friends of Otter Creek Horse Trail volunteer group is partnering with DEC to host the event. The Friends of the Otter Creek Horse Trails (leaves DEC's website) is a volunteer group dedicated to stewardship of DEC's unique and extensive Otter Creek Horse Trail system in Lewis County. Their goals include working with government, businesses and users to ensure that people who use the trail system enjoy their experience responsibly and safely and appreciate the value of the trails to the area.
Participants are encouraged to Love Our New York Lands all year by practicing Leave No Trace™ principles and by recreating safely, sustainably, and hiking in suitable conditions based on weather and experience level.
