DEC operates 12 fish hatcheries and stocks millions of freshwater fish into more than 1,200 public streams, rivers, lakes and ponds across the state. Numerous fish species are raised, including brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout/steelhead, lake trout, Chinook salmon, coho salmon, Atlantic (landlocked) salmon, walleye, muskellunge, tiger muskellunge, lake sturgeon, cisco and round whitefish.

Visiting DEC Hatcheries
All hatcheries are open to the public for free from spring through fall, and several are open year-round. Contact and location information, as well as details on the fish reared at each hatchery is available below.
Accessible Features
The Oneida and Salmon River hatcheries have universally accessible features.
From the Oneida Hatchery Parking Area in the Village of Constantia, wheelchair accessible features include the:
- Viewing area;
- Picnic area; and
- Restroom
From the Salmon River Hatchery Parking Area in the Village of Altmar, wheelchair accessible features include the:
- Viewing area
- Picnic area
