First Day Hikes is a nationwide initiative that takes place annually on New Year’s Day. The event encourages people to get outdoors and be active by participating in one of many guided hike opportunities held across the nation. DEC, the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks), and the Canal Corporation help coordinate the event in New York, with hikes planned at DEC lands, State Parks, historic sites, natural areas, canal trails, environmental education centers, and other public lands. The event includes a variety of staff, partner and volunteer led hikes, ranging from mountain climbs, cross-country skis, leisurely strolls along birding trails, and so much more!
First Day Hikes 2025
Thank you to everyone who celebrated the New Year outdoors with a 2025 First Day Hike! Thousands of New Yorkers attended events at DEC lands, State Parks and historic sites, wildlife areas, Forest Preserve trails, canal trails and towpaths, and environmental education centers across New York State. A big thank you to all our partners and staff who helped make this year so successful, and who make this program possible.
