Ridge Conservation Area: Ridge Interpretive Trail

Date: January 1st, 2026

Time: This hike starts at 10:00 a.m. Please arrive 15 minutes early. This hike will take more than an hour.

Meet Up Location: 484 Randall Road, Ridge, NY 11961 (GPS Coordinates: 40.896984, -72.892727) Google Maps

Directions: Take Rt. 495 (L.I.E.) exit 68, north on William Floyd Parkway (CR 46) to Rt. 25 west. Travel .25 miles to turn right on Randall Road. The entrance is ~300ft on the left side.

Description: Join DEC staff and DEC Forest Rangers on a 2.25-mile walk that winds its way through the 184-acre Ridge Conservation Area. The hike features 14 interpretive posts describing forest, grassland, and pond habitats. This interpretive trail will provide scenic viewing locations and be completely guided. It will take more than an hour and is suitable for children who can walk this distance without assistance. The hike will leave promptly at 10 a.m. Please arrive by at least 9:45 a.m. so that we can organize hiking groups if necessary. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: Trail is relatively flat with a few slight inclines. Short stops will be made at 14 interpretive posts along the route.

Special Instructions: Please be prepared for the COLD! Wear warm clothing in layers - long pants, hat, gloves, etc. Check the weather for Ridge Conservation Area and assume that the winds will produce wind chill. It’s also suggested to bring water, binoculars, and a camera. Severe weather and/or unsafe driving conditions may cause us to cancel this walk. All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Mount Loretto Unique Area – Hike with the Protectors of Pine Oak Woods!

Description: Join the Protectors of Pine Oak Woods for a refreshing 2-mile coastal hike at Staten Island’s Mount Loretto Unique Area, where we will enjoy forest and meadow trails, walk along the Raritan Bay shoreline, and take in sweeping views from the bluff while looking and listening for birds. Registration is not required.

Difficulty Level: Easy, with spots to sit and rest along the route.

Special Instructions: Please dress for the weather. This event is rain or shine. All ages welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center: Sierra Trail – Hike with the Stony Kill Foundation!

Description: Join the Stony Kill Foundation on an invigorating 2-mile hike through hardwood forest, evergreen forest, wetland, and open meadow habitats, where you are bound to see a remarkable array of plants and animals. The trail surface is mostly hard dirt with stretches of grass. Registration is required.

The Stony Kill Foundation will be hosting this hike as part of programming at Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center.

Difficulty Level: Easy, with some rough terrain, but no inclines.

Special Instructions: Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and dress for the weather. There are not any restroom facilities at the trail. Please use the Comfort Station Restroom located at Stony Kill Farm, 79 Farmstead Lane, Wappingers Falls, 12590 prior to the hike if needed. If there is inclement weather, this hike will be cancelled and registered hikers will be notified by email. All ages welcome. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Balsam Mountain – Hike with the Catskill Mountain Club!

Date: January 1st, 2026

Meet Up Location: Rider Hollow Trailhead (GPS Coordinates: 42.10201, -74.51694) Google Maps

Driving directions: To reach the Rider Hollow Trailhead from the east, take State Route 28 39 miles west from the traffic circle at Exit 19 (Kingston) of the NYS Thruway to Galli Curci Road at Highmount and turn left. (This is the same turn for the Belleayre Ski Center.) Proceed 4.95 miles on Galli Curci Road (Ulster Co. Hwy 49A) (becomes Todd Mtn. Rd.) and turn left onto Rider Hollow Road. Continue to the end of the road (2.1 mi.) to the trailhead.

From the west, take State Route 28 to Dry Brook Road (1.2 miles east of Margaretville) and turn right, following the signs for Dry Brook Ridge. Take Dry Brook Rd. 4.7 miles and turn left (following signs for Rider Hollow) onto Todd Mountain Road. Continue less than a half mile and turn right onto Rider Hollow Rd. Continue 2.1 miles to the end of the road/ trailhead.

Description: Join the Catskill Mountain Club on this 5.2-mile loop trail to the 3600ft summit of Balsam Mountain. We will ascend the Mine Hollow Trail and return via the Oliverea-Mapledale Trail. We will move at a brisk yet moderate pace (about 1.5 mph) with short breaks as needed and a lunch break at the top.  Registration is required. Difficulty Level: Moderate/difficult, with about 1600ft of elevation gain. Hikers should be experienced in ascending and descending in winter conditions.

Special Instructions: Please bring a lunch/snacks, water, proper winter layers and outerwear, cold-weather footwear, gaiters, microspikes, snowshoes, and hiking poles (if desired). Severe weather or trail conditions will postpone or cancel the hike. Hikers must be at least 12 years old to participate in this hike. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Red Hill Fire Tower – Hike with the NYS Outdoor Guide Association!

Description: Join NYS Outdoor Guide Association guide Michael O’Neill for a First Day Hike up Red Hill Mountain! This scenic trail leads to a historic fire tower with sweeping panoramic views. The route is approximately 3.5 miles round-trip, making it an excellent option for a half day adventure and suitable for a variety of experience levels. The hike begins on a gently rising forest path that winds through stands of maple, birch, and hemlock. Midway up the trail, the hike becomes slightly steeper and offers glimpses of the surrounding ridge lines through breaks in the trees. At the summit, you will find the historic Red Hill Fire Tower along with the restored cabin once staffed by tower observers. Climb the fire tower steps, and the panorama expands dramatically for a full 360° view of the mountains. Registration is required.

For those looking to complete the 2026 Catskills Fire Tower Challenge (coordinated by NYSDEC), this is a great start!

Difficulty Level: Moderate. This is a well-defined trail, with areas along the route where hikers can rest if needed.

Special Instructions: Hikers should be prepared for cold, and/or wet weather. Please wear appropriate footwear, warm clothing, and bring water. There are picnic tables at the summit, if you would like to bring snacks and drinks to enjoy at the top. All ages welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Giant Ledge and Panther Mountain – Hike with the Catskill 3500 Club!

Description: Join the Catskill 3500 Club on a challenging hike to some of the most breathtaking views in the Catskills! This hike will cover 6.9 miles and is recommended for experienced hikers. Difficulty Level: This is considered a strenuous and difficult hike geared towards experienced hikers. Winter equipment such as crampons and/or snowshoes will be required. The hike leader will be in contact with registered hikers to advise them on conditions and the difficulty level of this hike.

Neversink River Unique Area: Mullet Falls – Hike with the NYS Outdoor Guide Association (NYSOGA) and the Catskill Mountainkeeper!

Description: Join Deep Rooted Wellness and NYS Outdoor Guide Association guide Audrey Costa and the Catskill Mountainkeeper for a refreshing 3.3-mile winter hike on the Blue Trail East, located at the end of Katrina Falls Road in the Neversink River Unique Area. We will make our way across peaceful creek crossings and follow the wooded trail up to Mullet Falls—a charming, short waterfall tucked into the quiet winter woods.

Winter hiking brings its own kind of magic—crisp air, serene landscapes, and the chance to slow down and reconnect with yourself in nature. Come experience the joy of moving mindfully through the colder months with community and intention. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: Beginner/Intermediate (due to winter conditions), with 492ft elevation gain and some rocky and uneven terrain. We will hike at a leisurely pace to accommodate all levels.

Special Instructions: Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring traction devices (microspikes!) and be prepared for winter conditions; traction devices may be needed for safety. This route includes some rocky sections, so supportive footwear is recommended. Please bring water and a snack. In case of inclement weather, this hike will be cancelled and registered hikers will be notified. Hikers must be at least 8 years old to participate in this hike. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Willowemoc Wild Forest: Frick Pond Trail – Hike with Morgan Outdoors!

Description: Celebrate the New Year with fresh air and friendly folks. This scenic 2.2-mile loop trail in the Willowemoc Wild Forest is both inviting for beginners and pleasing to more experienced hikers. Our pathway will take us through a hemlock grotto with views across the pond, across a trail intersection named for Times Square, and along the edge of a woodland meadow. Registration is required.

This hike will be led by Lisa Lyons from Morgan Outdoors.

Difficulty Level: Relatively easy, with very little elevation change. If there is no snow on the ground, there can be many trip hazards. The hike leader will bring a comfy pad for sitting on a fallen tree or rock, for those who may need to sit and rest.

Special Instructions: Please wear waterproof hiking boots and layers that can easily be taken on or off. Depending on the trail conditions, bring traction devices like microspikes or snowshoes. Microspike rentals available (limited quantity at special First Day Hike rate) at Morgan Outdoors, 234 Main Street, Hurleyville, NY. We will have a special New Year’s toast after the hike! Hikers must be at least 18 years old to participate in this hike. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Five Rivers Environmental Education Center: Adventure NY Hikes

Description: Start the year with some outdoor fun at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center! We will stretch our legs and clear our heads on two easy-paced guided walks for all ages. The morning walk (10:30 a.m.) will cover about 0.75 miles, while the afternoon walk (1:30 p.m.) will cover about 1.5 miles. Our routes will take us over portions of the Old Field and North Loop trails. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: 10:30 AM hike = easy; flat terrain on grass and gravel-covered trails. 1:30 PM hike = moderate; may include some short inclines; grass-, gravel- and dirt-covered trails. There are a few benches along the planned routes where you can sit and rest if needed.

Special Instructions: Dress for the weather. In the event of severe weather, these programs will be canceled. All ages welcome. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Five Rivers Environmental Education Center – Hike with the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club!

Description: Community Science: NEW YEAR’S BIRD COUNT!

Join local bird experts from the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club for our 45th annual New Year’s Day Bird Count. The goal of the count is to identify all the bird species present on January 1st. This also marks the start of Five Rivers’ annual bird list. Five Rivers Environmental Education Center is a large area of fields and forests and is one of the premier birding locations in the Capital District. Participants will be divided into multiple trail parties to ensure we survey as much of the property as possible. Registration is not required.

Difficulty Level: Moderate, generally flat terrain, with a few short inclines; trail is a combination of grass, stone, and/or dirt. Expect to walk 1-2 miles over 1.5-2hrs. Trails may be wet or muddy, depending upon the weather in the days prior to the program.

Special Instructions: Please bring binoculars if you have them and dress warmly. If severe weather is forecast, call 518-475-0291 before 3:00 PM on Wednesday, Dec. 31, to confirm the event will be held. All ages are welcome. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Kaaterskill Rail Trail – Hike with the Mountaintop Historical Society!

Join us for a truly lovely and invigorating 4-mile round trip jaunt from the MTHS campus, winding through the majestic Catskill Forest Preserve, to the breathtaking Kaaterskill Falls. Difficulty Level: Primarily flat with minimal incline and decline. Suitable for a wide range of hiking levels. About 1.5 miles into the hike, there are some benches available for sitting and resting if needed.

Huckleberry Point – Hike with the Catskill 3500 Club!

Description: Join the Catskill 3500 Club on a predawn hike to Huckleberry Point to watch the sun rise over the Hudson Valley on New Year's Day. The total distance will be 4.8 miles with 1,200 feet of climbing. This hike is best suited for hikers with experience in winter hiking. The hike is also an opportunity to try hiking in the dark with a headlamp. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: This hike is considered moderately difficult. Winter equipment such as crampons and/or snowshoes will be required. Please be prepared for wintery conditions including icy trails, slippery ascents and descents, and possibly deep snow. 

Special Instructions: Hikers will be required to bring microspikes, snowshoes, a headlamp, food and drinks, and winter clothing. The hike leader will be in contact with registered hikers two days before the hike to advise them on conditions. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Cat Mountain – Hike with the Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club!

Meet Up Location: Edge Comb Pond Trailhead (GPS Coordinates: 43.576357, -73.685386) Google Map

Directions – Get off the Northway at exit 24 and head towards Bolton Landing. At 2.0 miles, turn right onto Valley Woods Road. At 0.6 miles, turn right onto Edgecomb Pond Road. Follow this road for 1.5 miles before turning right onto Edgecomb Pond Road (again). In 600ft, the trailhead will be on your right. If you have trouble finding it on your phone or map, email [email protected] for further directions.

Description: Join the Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club on a First Day Hike up Cat Mountain! We will hike to the summit via the Red Trail and take the Blue Trail on the way down. The total round-trip distance of this moderate hike is 4.1 miles, with approximately 1,000ft vertical gain. It should take around 2.5 hours to complete. The summit of Cat Mountain offers great views of Lake George, with Buck Mountain almost directly to the East. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: 1,000ft vertical gain, moderately challenging. Although there is no age minimum for this hike, it is probably not appropriate for a child’s first hike.

Special Instructions: You may need micro spikes or snowshoes. If you own them, bring them, and it will be decided at the trailhead whether they are needed. The hike leader, Steve Mackey, has a few extra pairs of each, but needs to know ahead of time if they are needed. Bring some food and drink; something hot in a thermos is always good. It's a good idea to have an extra down jacket or layers in your pack, for extra warmth on the summit. You should carry a headlamp or flashlight, as it is always wise to bring for unforeseen situations. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Difficulty Level: No elevation gain, level trail surface. Trail is ADA Accessible, but winter weather may affect the conditions of the trail. There are spots along the trail where folks can sit and rest if needed.

Lost Pond

Description: Feel found at Lost Pond! Join DEC staff for a 3.7-mile backcountry hike to Lost Pond, a hidden gem tucked away in the Adirondacks. Registration is not required.

Difficulty Level: Gradual inclines – this hike does not get very steep at any point on the route. The trial is known to be muddy and can get icy in the winter. We will stop and rest when needed.

Special Instructions: Please bring appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. All ages welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Description: Join DEC Forest Ranger Matthew Adams for a 3-mile hike around Heron Marsh where there will be plenty of spots to stop, take in the view, and look for wildlife. Registration is not required.

This hike is hosted in partnership with Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center.

Difficulty Level: Moderate. Trail is fairly flat, with some gentle hills. There are some benches and viewing areas along the way for those who would like to stop and rest.

Special Instructions: Be prepared with good footwear, warm clothes, and layers. Snowshoes are required if conditions allow, but will be provided for free through the VIC. All ages welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Silver Lake Mountain – Sunrise Hike!

Time: We will start this hike at 6:00 AM, to reach the summit for sunrise at 7:30 a.m. Please arrive at the parking lot at least 15min early. We will finish around 9 a.m.

Description: Watch the sunrise on the first day of 2026 from Silver Lake Mountain! This 1.8-mile round trip hike, led by DEC staff, offers big views of Taylor Pond, Whiteface Mountain, and the northeastern Adirondacks from the summit. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: This is a short hike, but it gains roughly 900ft in elevation, making it moderately steep. There are a few sections of exposed bedrock and roots, but nothing terribly difficult to navigate. Every 0.3 miles or so there is a small clearing with a lookout, as well as plenty of rocks and logs to sit and rest along the way!

Special Instructions: This is a SUNRISE hike, meaning that we will arrive at the trailhead, and climb the mountain in the dark. Headlamps are a necessity, as are microspikes/crampons due to ice near the summit. Snowshoes and trekking poles are recommended, but not required, as the trail will be packed down from moderate foot traffic. Dress warm, as there is often a breeze at the summit! Hikers must be at least 8 years old to participate in this hike. No pets are allowed on this hike.

Lake Colby Conservation Education Camp

Directions: Coming from Saranac Lake, drive past the Lake Colby boat launch. Turn left at the 4-way intersection onto Pecks Corners Roads. Please park on the left side of the road (the side with the stone wall) in a single file line as far over as you can get. There is space to turn around further up the road. Once parked, please walk through the gate down the paved driveway into camp. We will gather at the pavilion by the entrance.

Description: Visit Camp Colby to engage with DEC Environmental Educators and learn about the Camp's ecology, history, and programs. All are welcome on this short, 1-mile or less, beginner and family friendly hike! Registration is not required.

Difficulty Level: Beginner friendly hike. Only small hills, with negligible elevation gain. There are spots to rest along the way, and we will make frequent stops to discuss the surrounding ecology and program materials.

Special Instructions: Attendees should bring snowshoes if they have them. Please dress warmly and for the weather - it is frequently below 0°F during the day this time of year. Description: Please DEC staff at the Utica Marsh Wildlife Management Area for a 4-mile scenic walk along the Erie Canal and adjacent wetlands as we look for local wildlife thriving in central New York at the turn of the New Year. There is a wildlife viewing platform at the end of the hike where we will stop to look for wildlife in the ponds, particularly waterfowl. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: Flat terrain, with pavement along the entire route.

Special Instructions: Be prepared for winter weather and cool winds by bringing appropriate winter clothing and boots. An umbrella may be handy if it is raining. Please bring binoculars or a spotting scope for wildlife viewing. All ages are welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Description: Join DEC staff and the Winona Forest Recreation Association for a 2-mile snowshoe on the CCC Loop Trail which goes through natural hardwood forests, plantations established by Civil Conservation Corps, and along a portion of Skinner Creek. Depending on snow conditions, we may modify the route or complete it as a hike instead. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Difficulty Level: Moderate - depending on conditions this will either be a hike or a snowshoe event. Weather conditions may impact difficulty

Special Instructions: Hikers should be prepared for winter conditions, and bring snowshoes, proper clothing, and water. There are other trails on the property, so participants can spend additional time enjoying the area after the organized hike, if they would like. Participants can greet the New Year atop the 40-foot Fire Tower while enjoying the frosty-clear view of Tupper Lake, Eagle Crag Lake, and Mt. Arab Lake. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: Moderate. There are places of steep incline, but they are generally short and not very long. Total elevation gain is 750ft over 1.0 mile (average 14% slope).

Bowman Lake State Park and McDonough State Forest: Kopac Trail – Hike with the Bullthistle Hiking Club, DEC, and State Parks!

Description: Please join DEC, NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the Bullthistle Hiking Club on New Year's Day for a First Day Hike! This 5-mile out-and-back hike from Bowman Lake, Kopac Pond, and Whaley Pond is located on relatively level ground in the forested public lands of Bowman Lake State Park and McDonough State Forest. The Kopac Trail traverses through mature timberlands with towering white pines, nearby wetlands with active beaver sites, along streams, lakes and ponds including Kopac Pond, past cultural sites such as century old stone walls, and across other recreational trails, such as the Finger Lakes Trail. Options are available for shorter hikes.

Staff from State Parks and DEC, as well as members of the Bullthistle Hiking Club, will be available to lead the hikes, navigate the woods, and discuss points of interest. Registration is not required.

Difficulty Level: The terrain is gentle to moderate with some stream crossings. There are routes available for the beginning hiker and longer ones for more advanced enthusiasts. Hike distances range between 2-7 miles, depending on the selected route.

Rogers Environmental Education Center – Hike with the Friends of Rogers and the Bullthistle Hiking Club!

Description: Celebrate the 15th year of First Day Hikes with a guided walk at Rogers Environmental Education Center, led by the Friends of Rogers and the Bullthistle Hiking Club. Choose between a gentle 1.4-mile loop beside Channels Marsh and the Chenango River, or a more challenging 1.1-mile route to the Farm Tower for scenic views of the valley in winter. Registration is not required.

Difficulty Level: Hike 1: Easy - 1.4-mile loop of flat terrain bordering Channels marsh and the edge of the Chenango River. Some tree roots and one mild incline.

Hike 2: Moderate - 1.1-mile loop, including a moderately steep uphill to the Farm Tower with views of the surrounding valley.

There are Leopold benches where hikers can sit and rest along both trails.

Hemlock-Canadice State Forest – Hike with Springwater Trails!

Description: Start the New Year the way you mean to go on – come for an inspiring hike along Canadice Lake with Springwater Trails! This is an easy, 4-mile out-and-back hike along the shore of the lake; the trail is level and well-maintained and the lake views are lovely. For most hikers it will be a walk along the lake for an hour or so, and then back the same way; more enthusiastic hikers can veer off on Rob’s Trail that leads over the ridge and down to Hemlock Lake – this is a moderate to hard trail with several steep uphill and downhill sections. We’ll take a roll call the day of the hike if anyone wants to walk Rob’s Trail. We’ll arrange for transport back for those who only want to walk one way. Difficulty Level: The hike along Canadice Lake is considered easy, and the trail is level and well-maintained. The Rob’s Trail option is moderate/difficult, especially if it is icy, with some steep uphill and downhill sections.

Special Instructions: Dress appropriately for the weather, carry water and some energy food, and carry a walking pole if it helps. There will not be an organized social for this hike, but the Birdhouse in Honoeye nearby will be open. All ages are welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Montezuma Audubon Center

Description: Happy New Year! Start off your 2026 right with a birding excursion through the various habitats at the Montezuma Audubon Center. Join center staff on a leisurely ~ 1.5-mile easy hike through forest habitat, grasslands, and marshes in this Important Bird Area that some birds call home through the snowfall. Wildlife observers of ALL levels welcome and encouraged. Binoculars will be provided for those that need them. Trail conditions may be slippery and wet depending on the weather. Registration is required.

Difficulty Level: Easy - trail is relatively flat with varying terrain of gravel, dirt, and grass that could feature some low spots and tree roots. Trail does have one moderately strenuous slope that will not be taken if trail conditions are icy. Benches are present at the start of the trail.

Special Instructions: Hikers should dress prepared for the elements; boots/waterproof footwear are recommended. This hike will still occur if there is snow on the ground, light rain, or light snowfall. A limited supply of snowshoes may be provided if needed. In the event of harsh weather, participants will be notified of cancellations by 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 31st. This is a family friendly event for all ages. Phillips Creek State Forest: West Almond Trail System – Hike with IMPACT!

Description: Start the New Year right! Hike, snowshoe, or ski with IMPACT: Friends Improving Allegany County Trails, Inc. in Phillips Creek State Forest. A variety of trail options are available: Beginner Trail (0.8 mi.), Trail 1 (1.5 mi.), Trail 2 (1.25 mi.), and Trail 3 (2.0 mi.). Registration is not required for these hikes.

Difficulty Level: Trails 1 and 2 are easy 1.25 – 1.5-mile loops. Trail 3 is a 2-mile loop trail with moderate elevation change. There is a bench for resting at the 1-mile mark on Trail 3 and at the 0.6-mile mark on Trail 2. The beginner Trail is 0.8 miles, with no elevation change.

Special Instructions: Depending on the weather, you can choose to cross-country ski, snowshoe, or hike with us. Please dress for the weather! Difficulty Level: Generally easy. One or two shallow sloped hills or inclines – otherwise a relatively flat hike with few obstacles. There are several viewing points throughout the hike where we can stop and rest.

Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate hike, along a meandering trail that traverses rolling terrain.
