In spring, hikers can see an abundance of spring azure butterflies flying low to the ground, and mourning cloak butterflies emerging from tree hollows. Each June, painted and snapping turtles come ashore to lay eggs. Walking on the park's woodland trails, you are likely to see box turtles, squirrels and eastern cottontail rabbits. As the days turn cold, a wide variety of ducks can be seen over-wintering on Belmont Lake, including canvasbacks, widgeons, pintails and mergansers. On clear winter days, painted turtles are seen sunning themselves on semi-submerged logs.
